27/09/2012 - LG Display countersues Samsung over OLED patent infringement

The strained relationship between the two tentpoles of Korea's tech industry is starting to wear, now that LG Display has counter-sued its local rival over OLED patents. Earlier this month, Samsung filed for an injunction accusing its frenemy of stealing secrets, but LG is claiming instead that it's the victim. If successful, Lucky Goldstar would seek a ban on devices including the Galaxy S III, Galaxy Tab and Galaxy Note on the pair's home turf -- so, yeah, this one looks like it's going to run and run.

06/11/2011 - DuPont's AMOLED HDTV tech licensed by... someone, will likely be used to build HDTVs

DuPont has wanted to bring AMOLED HDTVs to market since at least 2006, and now it appears they've found a partner to help make that happen. There's no name given, but a "leading Asian manufacturer" (Samsung's shown off the tech before and we figure it has some R&D cash to reallocate after dumping ZScreen) has apparently licensed the tech and, we assume, plans to put it to use. DuPont claims AMOLED HDTVs will be better than current LCDs in pretty much every way (color, contrast, response speed, viewing angle, power efficiency), as long they actually ever go one sale. Given the timing, we're hoping there will be something to see come CES time so we can find out if 2012 will finally be OLED's year. 08/02/2011 - Barco's NX4 3D video wall does LED on a decidedly large scale (video)

If we've learned one thing over the years it's that Barco doesn't do small -- whether it's 3D CAD systems or even projectors. The company's latest mammoth offering is the NX4 3D LED videowall, measuring 10.453 meters wide by 2.352 meters tall -- about 35 feet wide and eight feet tall. It has a total resolution of 2240 x 504 with a 4.66mm pixel pitch, making this a definite candidate for a place where volume is more important than pixel density. A brightness of over 2000 nits and a 4000:1 contrast ratio means outdoor work is a possibility, though if you want 3D you'll have to BYO active-shutter glasses.

30/03/2010 - Samsung's SMX-C20UN is compact, oddly angled, and YouTube friendly

Samsung's had this thing with the angled lenses lately. Apparently the camera is much more ergonomic when pointed down 25 degrees -- which is probably a much less natural shooting position as well, but we'll leave that up to you to decide. Anyways, the company's newest such beauty, the SMX-C20UN, features a 2.7-inch display, 1/6-inch (680K) CCD sensor, 10x optical zoom, SDHC storage, and support for H.264 video. As is usually the case nowadays, video can be edited on the camera and uploaded directly to YouTube -- perfect for capturing those embarrassing v-blogs before you sober up and your social filter kicks in. Available now for $200.

29/01/2010 - Mitsubishi to introduce preposterously large 149-inch OLED TV at ISE 2010

Yeah, you can snag a TV larger than this, but good luck finding a 150-inch set with an OLED panel. In a presumed effort to quietly exert superiority over those "other guys," Mitsubishi is purportedly planning to unveil a 149-inch OLED TV at ISE 2010, which kicks off in earnest next week -- though, we have to say, we sure hope it's not one of those modular units that we saw at CEATEC. Unfortunately, the native resolution of just 1,088 x 640 is downright boring, but we're forcing ourselves to focus on the positives here. Essentially, something like this wouldn't have much use outside the world of digital signage, but man, talk about making an impact on to-be customers. So, Mitsu -- when's the 1080p 4K version coming out?

07/12/2009 - LED Breathes New Life into Monitor Market

Capitalizing on the slim form factor and energy savings potential, the use of LEDs in LCD monitor panels is growing rapidly, according to DisplaySearch.

Although LED backlight penetration in monitor panels was only 1.4% in Q3’09, current panel maker plans indicate that the penetration could reach 22% in Q3’10, assuming adoption by brands.

InnoLux was the leading supplier of LED backlit monitor panels in Q3’09, with 34.4% of unit shipments.

26/11/2009 - OKI Develops Industry’s First 1.1 Inch QVGA High Brightness LED

OKI Digital Imaging, a subsidiary of OKI Data Corporation (a subsidiary that develops, manufactures, and markets LEDs), announced it has succeeded in developing a 1.1 inch QVGA (Quarter Video Graphics Array) LED display while reducing power consumption to one-tenth that of conventional LCDs.

According to OKI, this achievement is the direct result of a new company technology that enhances luminance efficiency, based on refinements of its proprietary Epi Film Bonding technology that permit two-dimensional deployment.

28/10/2009 - OSRAM Sets a Milestone in Developing OLED Technology

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors has set an important milestone in developing OLED technology. The OLED prototypes that OSRAM has developed as part of a research project are large transparent light sources only a few hundred micrometers thick.

Thanks to new technology these organic light emitting diodes do not need separate encapsulation and can be made incredibly thin in any layout.

The transparent test samples have a luminous area of 210 cm² and are already showing the enormous potential of OLED light sources.

28/10/2009 - VIZIO brings the LED party to 19- and 23-inch models

Unless you've been under a rock for a hot minute, then you know that LED backlit LCD HDTVs have been all the rage, though so far no one has brought those benefits to the smaller TVs. Well today VIZIO added a 19-inch and a 23-inch model to its LED lineup. Only the 23-inch is 1080p, but both have very thin profiles and the improved contrast and color you'd expect. The interesting twist is that both models will work as a picture frame, which someone (as in, literally one person in some random corner of the globe) might appreciate. The 19-inch model retails for $349, and the 23-inch will set you back another $50, but there's no word on when you can expect these to show up on a store shelf near you. As Japan approaches the end of analogue broadcasting in 2011, the digital TV market has entered a period of diversifying customer needs.

“In order to meet demand for more vivid reproduction of high contrast, high definition images, simultaneous viewing and recording of multiple programs, along with access to broadband content,” as they say, Toshiba just unveiled newly developed CELL REGZA TV and the CELL Platform.

CELL REGZA 55X1 is the new flagship of the company's REGZA line-up and will be available in the Japanese market from the beginning of December.

The odds-on favorite for the display technology to supplant LCD dominance is, of course, OLED. Based on the curent woes in the plasma display space, color accuracy and black levels (which OLEDs have in spades) might not be enough to upset the LCD applecart, so it's no surprise to see so much research aimed at bringing up the output efficiency of OLEDs. For its part, Toshiba is playing around with diffraction gratings to increase the brightness (specifically, the coherency) of OLED displays. The silica nano-gratings have yielded a 60-percent increase in light extraction efficiency, no small potatoes. File this one under "research," as Toshiba itself says this tech is years away from commercial reality; of course, Toshiba's been saying that about OLED for a long time now.
