The same goes for account credit -- either use it, or face the hassle of claiming it back after the fact. That's according to the Xbox One landing page on Xbox.com, spotted by our friends at <em>Joystiq</em>, which says, "With Xbox One, you can start playing immediately as games install. And updates install seamlessly in the background, so your games and entertainment won't be interrupted."</p> <p>And that's not all they've sussed out in details -- the Xbox One will also have a 1,000-person friend cap. How does that tie into the Skype integration? Good question! The official FAQ starts off with the "always-on" DRM question and also addresses used games, indicating that the box is designed "so you can play games and watch Blu-ray movies and live TV if you lose your connection," and that it does not have to always be connected. That said, it still "requires" a connection to the internet, promising cloud-based benefits for gameplay and more. When it comes to used games, the FAQ's response is also promising, stating "We are designing Xbox One to enable customers to trade in and resell games." As will your Xbox Live Gamertag.</p> <p>Sadly, due to the x86 architecture of the Xbox One, the PowerPC-based 360 titles simply won't run on the hardware. Microsoft's not super worried about consumer reaction, though, telling Engadget, "We care very much about the investment people have made in Xbox 360 and will continue to support it with a pipeline of new games and new apps well into the future," a Microsoft rep told us. We're obviously outsiders on Microsoft's multi-building, security-heavy Mountain View campus, especially given our quartet of esteemed escorts: Todd Holmdahl, Ilan Spillinger, Nick Baker and Greg Williams. These four gentlemen are leading the charge on both Microsoft's next big thing and, perhaps more importantly, a major effort to internalize silicon architecture at the traditionally software-focused megacorp.</p> <p>The skittish engineers aren't worried we'll film the mess of 24-inch LCD screens running video-compression tests, or the rows of desks with water hose stations used for temperature stress tests, or even the sea of circuit boards in various states of disrepair -- that's all standard for any Silicon Valley computer lab. It's really just a single chip that's causing concern: a custom-built Microsoft SoC that sits at the heart of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/21/microsoft-unveils-its-next-game-console-the-tktk/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Engadget">Xbox One</a>. It's this SoC that has us in Mountain View, Calif. -- in Silicon Valley, literally down the road from Google -- a mere five days before Microsoft will unveil its next game console to the world. Spielberg will be the executive producer and the show will provide "exclusive interactive Xbox One content," whatever that means. Unfortunately, neither Microsoft nor Mr. Spielberg are telling when the show will actually be available for your eyeballs to view, but it is, most assuredly an <em>actual thing</em>. The camera peripheral is getting some major improvements in its second iteration, and it's expected to ship with every new console at launch. One of the most impressive features is the ability to wake the console with just a voice command. Simply say "Xbox on" and you're ready to get gaming. In fact, you can shout all sorts of things at your new Kinect, such as "watch TV" or (wait for it...) "snap Internet Explorer." That's right, there is true multitasking built into Xbox One and you can move windows around or switch between tasks, with just a voice command. Of course, you can also navigate the various panels and screens with the usual hand waves and air pinches, should you feel a bit silly talking to your console.</p> <p>On the inside is a 1080p camera -- a <em>huge</em> step up from the VGA sensor on the original Kinect. The new motion controller processes a stunning 2GB of data per-second to accurately read your environment. Everything about this second iteration of the Kinect is more accurate, in fact, from the number of reference points on your skeleton it monitors down to its ability to read your heartbeat. It even has the ability to talk to the standard Xbox controller for some Move-like functionality. Lift the remote and you'll lift your shield in the game, for example. Microsoft exec Don Mattrick called it out as an "all-in-one" box. The core strategy is "simple, instant, and complete." It was debuted alongside a new gamepad as well as a new Kinect motion camera.</p> <p>The system itself is all black and features a two-tone finish with both matte and gloss in equal measure; a slot-loading Blu-ray optical drive sits out front on the left face, while a power button with the traditional incomplete circle symbol is emblazoned on the right side (which looks to be touch-based). A new Kinect was also unveiled, and it powers the console -- "Xbox On" is being trumpeted as the most important feature. There's instant switching from the Xbox One dashboard to live television (which seems to confirm that HDMI-in rumor), and a live demo is showing off impressive speeds. "Switching between live tv and all your games and entertainment is now as simple as using a remote," Microsoft's Yusuf Mehdi said. Additionally, Scandinavian operator Com Hem is about to start offering an IPTV service built on TiVo's devices, and is accepter preregistrations to be an early tester. The Com Hem project will combine an internet TV service with the usual TiVo features -- including <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/07/tivo-desktop-pc-free-version-disappears-june-5th/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Engadget">TiVoToGo</a> -- and DVR capable of recording up to three HD channels at once. The social aspect of the service -- along with its Facebook integration -- is arguably the most interesting as it makes it easier to discover programs based on recommendations pulled from your friends' activity. NextGuide's web service is currently invitation-only, but users of the iPad app and Dijit Remote will be able to log on immediately. In addition to that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/28/lg-curved-oled-hdtv/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Engadget">55-inch curved OLED TV</a> we first heard about last month, the company will be demonstrating a very nifty 5-inch OLED panel. Created for mobile devices, the display is constructed of plastic, making it both flexible and unbreakable -- certainly a welcome quality when it comes to smartphone design.</p> <p>Also on display will be 5- and 7-inch HD Oxide TFT panels. That first size features a bezel that's just 1mm wide, enabling a borderless frame when installed in smartphones. Both displays are lightweight and consume less power than their traditional equivalents. Finally, LG will have a 14-inch 2560x1440-pixel laptop panel on hand, along with LCDs designed for use in refrigerators and automotive dashboards. Now it's apparently ready to fulfill part of that promise, announcing in Korea that 65- and 55-inch models will launch next month. Of course our next question is how these smaller models will compare to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/20/samsung-s9-uhd-tv-pricing/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Engadget">$39,999 MSRP 85S9 UHD TV</a> in price. Hopefully they'll follow the path blazed by Sony, which recently <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/07/sony-4k-tv-pricing/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Engadget">introduced models at that size</a> with pricing well below the $10,000 benchmark, although we expect <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/15/seiki-offcially-prices-its-50-inch-4k-tv-at-1500-for-late-april/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Engadget">Seiki's 50-incher</a> will still hold the crown for value pricing. The CW already has ad supported full episode streaming on several platforms including iOS and Android, Windows 8 and it <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/24/the-cw-xbox-360-app/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Engadget">launched last month on the Xbox 360</a> (pictured above). Pedowitz indicated the network is working to reach more viewers on more platforms, so Apple TV is probably not the last. In a note to <em>MacRumors</em> The CW confirmed it will mirror the experience on other platforms, with episodes available the day after they air, no cable TV authentication required and supported by advertisements. Les Moonves is president of CBS (which is a part owner of The CW, along with Warner Bros.) and previously remarked on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/03/cbs-boss-reveals-why-the-company-was-against-joining-apple-tv/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Engadget">turning down</a> participation in an Apple subscription service funded by advertising revenue. Here, you get seven columns of tiles showing what's currently airing or what you've previously recorded. So whether you're in the mood for sports, prime time, movies, kids programming or whatever happens to be playing on your favorite channel, you're a tap away from watching it on your TV -- or directly on the iPad if you have <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/04/tivo-stream-transcoder-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Engadget">a TiVo Stream</a>. And of course you don't have to watch it right now; you can just as easily schedule a recording or season pass and watch it later.</p> <p>The new feature does seem handy, but configurable options are minimal. Basically, you're limited to rearranging the columns into a different order and filtering out specific sports you have little interest in -- no, you can't remove sports completely. Speaking of sports, thanks to TiVo's partnership with Thuuz, some sporting event tiles have a number between zero and a 100 assigned to them to help draw your attention to the most exciting matches currently in play. We got a look at TCL's custom-skinned MoVo Google TV platform and 4K TVs <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/10/tcl-ces-2013-movo-google-tv-110-inch-uhd-4k-iron-man/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Engadget">separately at CES</a> (pictured above, and in the gallery) so it only makes sense they'll be combining the two. Part of TCL's MoVo customizations include a motion sensor to recognize each user and personalize offerings based on their habits. Called Personal Box Office (PBO) or "Lazy TV" searches the available content and makes a recommendation without the need for a remote or even voice command. The press release indicates it will be available "later this year" although whether that includes a US release like <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/15/seiki-offcially-prices-its-50-inch-4k-tv-at-1500-for-late-april/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Engadget">Seiki's 50-inch Ultra HD set</a> remains to be seen. Other additions include more in-depth playback controls and support for paid subscriptions. What's more, it also says that it's "refactored" Google TV so that its OEMs can update their devices to future versions of Android faster than they're currently able to -- in a "matter of weeks rather than months," according to Google. Likewise, Chrome for Google TV will now be on the same six week upgrade cycle as its desktop counterpart going forward, and it'll also now come with support for hardware-based content protection.</p> <p>As for those with existing Google TV devices, though, the company's only saying that they can expect to see updates in the "coming months." We've yet to hear from most Google TV manufacturers themselves yet, but LG has chimed in to say that it will be updating its devices to Jelly Bean sometime in the third quarter of this year.
